UK Spearfishing courses

Cornwalls Top Spearfishing School

At Delphy Pool, we offer a range of immersive courses in sustainable spearfishing and coastal foraging. You can choose between a two-day course or our recommended three-day programme, which allows more time to refine skills, build confidence, and gain deeper experience in the water. We also run a dedicated foraging course for those who want to focus specifically on sourcing food from the coastline.

Designed by National Spearfishing and Freediving Champion Matt Hill and AIDA Master Instructor Oliver Cacioppo, our spearfishing courses combine essential freediving techniques with practical hunting skills and guided sessions in open water. Training takes place in small groups to ensure individual attention and meaningful feedback, helping you learn to harvest seafood responsibly while minimising impact on the marine environment.

About Delpy Pool Courses

Train in Cornwall’s bays, reefs, and open-water sites selected for safety, visibility, and marine life. You’ll develop spearfishing-specific breath control, improve underwater navigation, and learn to plan dives around tides, currents, and seasonal fish movement.

Alongside practical ocean sessions, we cover equipment setup, UK species identification, and techniques to increase efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Whether in small groups or one-to-one coaching, you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to spearfish responsibly in real-world conditions.

Safety and Freediving Education

All of our spearfishing courses are delivered by experienced freediving instructors, including one of the world’s leading freedivers, Matt Hill, who brings over 23 years of spearfishing experience. Freediving safety underpins every session, with structured supervision, clear protocols, and a strong focus on responsible training in open water.

Sustainable practices

We teach sustainable spearfishing practices only. This is not a safari-style hunt, and there’s no guarantee of a catch. Instead, the focus is on developing the skills, awareness, and safety knowledge needed to harvest responsibly and provide for your own table. Our approach promotes respect for marine life and a balanced, long-term relationship with the ocean.

Spearfishing UK

Our recommended three-day spearfishing course includes the opportunity to gain your AIDA 2 freediving certification (subject to meeting performance requirements). You’ll learn to dive to depths of up to 20 metres, use spearfishing equipment correctly, plan dives around tides and currents, and follow essential safety procedures. The course also covers legal UK catch limits, minimum sizes, species identification, and full equipment setup and handling.

Our two-day spearfishing course focuses on practical, safety-driven training without a formal freediving certification. You’ll develop essential breath-hold and diving skills to keep you safe in the water, learn to use spearfishing equipment correctly, and understand how to plan dives around tides and currents. The course also covers species identification, legal catch limits, minimum sizes, and responsible harvesting practices.

Our one-day explore and foraging course is a beginner-friendly introduction to sourcing food from the sea. You’ll stay in shallow water while learning the basics of safe speargun handling, identifying legal species, and foraging for shellfish and edible seaweeds. The focus is on sustainability, safety, and building the knowledge needed to responsibly gather your own seafood from the coastline.
